Deposit Recovery Account… The Direct Beneficiary May Be the Banks
Expert in monetary and banking law Tawfiq Shambour said there is confusion between three accounts at with similar names, including the deposit recovery account. He argued that depositors do not hold direct accounts or deposits with Banque du Liban; rather, the accounts in question belong to the banks, raising the question of whether depositors benefit directly from the newly created account. He also noted that the law did not specify the currency for recovery, criticizing former central bank governor Riad Salameh’s policy of using banks’ foreign currency funds.
