Expert Urges Water Utilities to Focus on Cybersecurity Basics
A cybersecurity expert urged water utilities to strengthen their security leadership and focus on basic defenses, amid new TrendAI research warning of an underground market selling access to industrial control systems. The report said stolen credentials, vulnerable edge devices and remote-access systems are common entry points, with critical infrastructure increasingly targeted. It also cited incidents in July involving Internet-facing programmable logic controllers in at least seven U.S. states. Recommendations included network segmentation, phishing-resistant multifactor authentication and patching Internet-facing appliances.
