FBI Acknowledges Major Hack of Employee Data
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation acknowledged it is investigating a "cyber incident" targeting data of current and former employees, after the group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the hack. In an internal memo, bureau leaders said they are operating on the premise that the threat actor is also exfiltrating personally identifiable information of all FBI employees, according to multiple reports. The leaked data reportedly includes home addresses, Social Security numbers, job assignments, unit names and emergency contact phone numbers, as well as medical data. The group said it was not seeking a financial payoff and that the hack was a "marketing campaign" whose goals had been accomplished, adding it would not publish the data. The breach involved an Oracle PeopleSoft database used in the FBIJobs.gov portal.
