Netanyahu-Sharaa call reveals Israel's dilemma in Syria
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that he spoke with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in July 2025, the first declared contact between the two leaders, according to Israeli diplomatic sources. Syrian officials have neither acknowledged nor denied the call. Netanyahu said the call came against the backdrop of violence between Druze and Bedouin groups in Syria's Swaida last summer, which killed more than 1,700 people. Sources say security negotiations between Israel and Syria have stalled since March after the US-Israeli attack on Iran, despite Syrian efforts to curb arms smuggling to Hezbollah.
