What alternative is possible to avoid dismantling UNIFIL?

With the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2790 ending UNIFIL's mandate in southern Lebanon approaching, political, diplomatic and military sources describe a pessimistic reading of the situation. They say Lebanese efforts led by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji, and contacts by President Joseph Aoun with US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, King Abdullah II, the UN and the European Union, have not yet changed the strict US position rejecting an extension and insisting on dismantling UNIFIL facilities and leaving Lebanon. The sources warn that ending the mission before the end of Israeli occupation, with about 60% of its facilities in occupied territory, would complicate implementation of Resolution 2790 and require a rapid understanding including Hezbollah relinquishing its weapons and border arrangements.
