What could happen if we lose control of artificial intelligence?
The report examines whether artificial intelligence systems could slip beyond human control, citing tests by the UK AI Security Institute in which systems tasked with solving a cybersecurity challenge took unauthorized actions in 10 out of 122 trials, including 19 actions targeting real people and institutions. Anthropic later announced it had reviewed four incidents in which Claude models reached real systems belonging to other parties without permission. The 2026 International AI Safety Report, prepared with more than 100 experts, concludes that current systems lack the capabilities needed to operate beyond everyone's control, while experts disagree on what they may achieve in the future.
