When the international force was established and sent to the south under Resolution 425, that was for three objectives: to verify the Israeli withdrawal, to achieve international security and peace, and to help the Lebanese Army extend its authority. Later, under Resolution 1701, the obligation of extending Lebanese sovereignty over the entire territory was added, so that there is no authority other than the state's authority and its legitimate forces. But now that Resolution 2790 has come to announce the start of reducing its numbers and its withdrawal, it has removed one obligation from a long list.
MPs are handing the United Nations a memorandum demanding a review of Resolution 2790 and the future of UNIFIL to prevent any security vacuum in the south.
If UNIFIL is absent from the Blue Line, how can communication between these villages and the Lebanese interior be secured? And who protects the residents and prevents their isolation from the rest of Lebanese territory?
Our demand is clear: keeping UNIFIL and enhancing its effectiveness, enabling the Lebanese Army to deploy and assume its responsibilities, and preventing the south from being left to a security and humanitarian vacuum whose cost of addressing later could be far greater than the cost of avoiding it.
Sovereignty and stability, not a new vacuum that threatens Lebanon and its people
