Mowafaq Tarif, leader of the Druze community in Israel, announced in a statement his support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about a week and a half before the Israeli elections, saying that Netanyahu "will enter the history of the Druze forever." Reports linked this position to efforts attributed in the statement to Tarif to stop what it described as the Druze massacre in southern Syria in July of last year.
