The city hall building in Limoges, central France, was hit by a massive fire during violence accompanying protests over the rising cost of living, causing large parts of the historic building to collapse. The governor of the Haute-Vienne region, Maurice Barret, said the fire caused the roof and tower to collapse and destroyed about two-thirds of the building's facade, describing what happened as a "heritage disaster" resulting from deliberate sabotage.
