Specter of Closure Knocks at the Doors of Restaurants
Lebanon's restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and patisseries sector is entering one of its worst phases in about 20 years, amid continued shrinking purchasing power, accumulating inflationary pressures, high operating costs, weak liquidity and the absence of bank financing. The head of the syndicate of restaurant, cafe, nightclub and patisserie owners, Tony al-Rami, warns that dozens of establishments could close soon, noting a 40% drop in sector activity and a roughly 50% decline in delivery orders, and that the short tourist season and expatriate spending are no longer enough to offset losses.
